FAQ

Q: What is Feng Shui?
A: Feng shui (pronounced "fung shway") is the 5000 year old Chinese practice of object orientation, placement, and arrangement. The phrase literally means, "wind water". Followers take into consideration the energy flow throughout a structure, arranging furniture and decorations to enhance the spiritual wellness of a home or office. According to the philosophy, energy (chi in Chinese) enters a home or office through the front door, which is deemed "the mouth of chi". That energy is then dispersed throughout the dwelling, helped or hindered by objects placed within certain sectors. People who practice feng shui use an ancient map called Ba'Gua to determine the relationship among a number of "elements", including fame, creativity, travel, and romance.

Q: How does Feng Shui work?
A: Feng Shui can improve our lives by enhancing all aspects and reinforcing our goals. Feng Shui works on many levels. On the physical level Feng Shui addresses the location of property within a community, the shape of the property, the location of a business or home on the property, the shape of the building, the placement of the rooms within the building as well as the placement of the furniture within the rooms. On a subconscious level Feng Shui deals with, light, movement, sound and color and the effects each has upon us. Also, on a subconscious level, Feng Shui addresses our inner thoughts and desires by acting on our physical environment in ways that reinforce our goals and points out any areas in which our environment may be working against us.

Q: What can I expect of a consultation?
A: Part of the consultation is an interview at your home, talking about areas of your life where you'd like improvement, enhance or support. We'll look at those corresponding areas in your home and place feng shui "cures" or "remedies" to turn things around. Much like your own business, the foundation of feng shui is intention. We will place things as needed (and as they suit you and your home) with intention (complete with a little ritual to maximize the energy behind that intention). I recently did a friend's home and a mutual friend of ours told me she was so impressed by how the energy of our friend's home had changed in just a few days that she wanted me to do her home.

Q: When I've researched Feng Shui myself, it seems that different books contradict each other. Why is that?
A: There are several different schools of feng shui. All schools of feng shui are based on similar universal knowledge, but have developed different approaches and techniques for identifying and balancing chi. All styles of feng shui work. I encourage you to follow the one that feels right for you.

Q: What if I'm limited in how I can arrange my furniture?
A: One of the things I love about feng shui is that it is very flexible. If we can't move furniture around, or things can't face a certain way, there are alternative cures we can use instead.

Q: Do I need to make expensive corrections (like knocking out walls and remodeling or even moving) to have good Feng Shui in my home or business?
A: A radical change is not necessary in most cases. There are many adjustments that can be made to correct imbalances, which are neither costly nor elaborate. Extreme measures are only recommended as a last resort. The final decision is always up to the client.

Q: I have heard that a red front door is good. Do I have to paint my front door red to have good Feng Shui?
A: While a red front door is considered "good" Feng Shui, it is not necessary for you to have a red front door to have "good" Feng Shui.

Q: Is Feng Shui a religion?
A: Feng Shui is not a religion. Feng Shui is an art based on the natural sciences, psychology and design principles. Feng Shui helps us to become conscious of universal law and to apply this knowledge to our everyday life. Feng Shui teaches us how to live in harmony with nature; to enhance our homes, careers, wealth, health, and relationships.

Q: I personally do not like crystals and I have heard that many Feng Shui cures use crystals. How can I get the advantages of Feng Shui without using crystals?
A: Crystals are NOT the only "cures" there are many ways to remedy situations. A good Feng Shui consultant will have several ways to "cure" any given situation. You do not need to be limited or have to live with something you do not like.

Q: I live in an apartment and want to move into a home. Should I wait until I move into the home to have a Feng Shui consultation?
A: One of the many benefits of Feng Shui is to help us attract what we want in our lives. It is always desirable to Feng Shui where you are right now. This will help you "clear" the space you currently occupy as well as attract the perfect home for you (among other things). Normally clients Feng Shui where they are-then have a consultant work with them during the "shopping phase" to insure the best Feng Shui possible. Then Feng Shui their new home BEFORE moving in. This allows the best possible start in a new home.

Q: How often should I get a feng shui consultation?
A: There is no rule as to how often a consultation "should" be done. Some reasons one may want to do periodic consultations are: annually to reinforce New Years resolutions or to earmark one's birthday; after a major life experience (or in anticipation of one) to mark a new era, and to reinforce a specific intention.

Q: Is there scientific proof that feng shui works?
A: Although there are no scientific studies that have focused on feng shui specifically, there are several studies that have recently proven aspects of feng shui (intention, energy imprints, psychological effects of architecture and quantum physics). I recommend the movies "What The Bleep" and "The Secret" for further insight into these principles.
